Outrage and Victimhood

by Tom Smith

/

about

I actually wrote this about a year and a half ago, and never got around to recording it. What bugs me the most is that I only had to change, like, seven words. Conspiracy theorists have taken over the intertubes, man.

lyrics

The whole world is changing, so fast you can see,
Most look to the future and what is to be,
But some look at this change and think “This affects me...
I’m in danger of losing my privilege.”

So snarl, pout, invoke tradition,
And all of the rules you don't follow yourselves
And that sound you hear is outrage and victimhood:
All the Republicans whining.

Some hunger for money, or power, or fame,
But the truth is, to most, it's a rich white men’s game.
They don't want to solve problems, but they know who to blame...
Strangely, never the cause of the problems.

So, more... guns... make the streets safer,
And windmills cause cancer, so keep burning oil,
Deregulation’s good for the bottom line:
All safety measures hurt profits.

Long ago, public servants were s’posed to, well, serve,
Nowadays, they complain when some folks have the nerve
To come asking for help they think they don't deserve...
Then they tell us how much they love Jesus.

So rant, rave, talk about deficits,
Then cut the taxes of all billionaires,
And spend all we’ve got to build the armed forces up,
All schoolkids rob us by eating.

There’s critical race theory, 1619,
Evolution, climate change, stories read by drag queens,
They call them all “woke”, but don't know what that means...
And LGBT sends them shrieking.

So search... out... your self-proclaimed experts,
Ten minutes of Googling beats decades of work,
And it's kerning, gun making, virology,
All of the truth is on TikTok.

We’ve been to the mountain, and taken our stance,
Democracy’s done, give fascism a chance,
And over and over, they’ll do the same dance:
“We cheated, now please send us money.”

And it's shout, shout, outrage and victimhood
Airing their grievances, grifting their base,
And it's fare thee well, all vestige of dignity.
All of the Repubs are kvetching.
