Internet Shanty

from In Concert: ConGlomeration 2015 by Tom Smith

about

or, "IT for the Wellerman". This is a commentary on the sudden surge in popularity of sea shanties on various social media sites. Having written a few myself, I thought I'd throw my hand in here as well. N.B.: Learning new music tools on the fly is fun. No, REALLY. Gaaaaaaaah.

lyrics

One morn I woke from fevered dreams
Then grabbed my tablet for news and memes
My Tik Tok feed was filled with screams
Of shanties high and low. (huh)

Soon may the internet come
To grips with a trend that’s fun and dumb
We will hum and drum and strum
Then post our vids and go.

The sounds of pirates filled my brain,
From Port Royal to the Bay of Biscayne,
Up and down the Spanish Main,
Those sailors stole the show.

Soon may the internet come
To grips with a trend that’s fun and dumb
We will hum and drum and strum
Then post our vids and go.

I tried to escape to Instagram,
But some Ren Faire boys were starting to jam,
I found a pirate poetry slam
And Stan Rogers video.

Soon may the internet come
To grips with a trend that’s fun and dumb
We will hum and drum and strum
Then post our vids and go.

Facebook, lads, was too far gone,
From a “Drunken Sailor” marathon,
And the old folks carried on
With Disney’s yo-ho-ho.

Soon may the internet come
To grips with a trend that’s fun and dumb
We will hum and drum and strum
Then post our vids and go.

And so it goes on to this day,
I fear I never shall get away,
So I might as well wet my pipes and play
And down the man I’ll blow.

Soon may the internet come
To grips with a trend that’s fun and dumb
We will hum and drum and strum
Then post our vids and go.

Soon may the internet come
To grips with a trend that’s fun and dumb
We will hum and drum and strum
Then post our vids and go.
