Brown and Quayle

from Ends 'n' Odds by Tom Smith

/

about

In May 1992, Vice President Dan Quayle -- already well-known for sticking his foot in his mouth -- made a speech in which he criticized TV character Murphy Brown for, basically, being a single mom. This went over about as well as you'd expect it would.

I was more than a bit of a jerk back then, and I was -- I admit it -- jealous of people like Barry and Sally Childs-Helton, who could easily lead a singalong. And at least a part of the reason I wrote this, besides that I got hit with the "Brown Eyed Girl/Brown and Quayle" homophone -- was that I wanted to be the one leading the filk room in "Brown Eyed Girl". Me, me, me me me me me.

I like to think I've grown up at least a little. If I haven't, please let me know. Soon.
